MEP Construction Manager Jobs in Japan: Guide (2026)
An MEP construction manager in Japan (設備施工管理, setsubi sekou kanri) manages the building services work on a project: piping, air conditioning, plumbing and electrical systems. The work is schedule, quality and safety control, not manual work. Most jobs ask for Japanese at about JLPT N3 or higher. AGG Careers has an open MEP construction manager job (AGG-J-020), and you can apply from Japan or from abroad. AGG charges candidates no fees.
What does an MEP construction manager do in Japan?
You make sure building services are installed on time, safely and to the drawings. MEP means mechanical, electrical and plumbing. In Japan, this field is often called setsubi (設備).
Schedule, quality and safety checks on site
Checking drawings, and coordinating them with other trades
Site records and photos
Meetings with the main contractor and subcontractors
The job does not include construction work by hand. That difference matters for your visa and for dispatch rules, as explained below.
How is MEP construction management different from building construction management?
The management skills are the same, but the subject is different. A building construction manager looks after the structure and finishes of the whole building. An MEP construction manager looks after the systems inside it. MEP work must also fit around the structure, so checking drawings and coordinating with other trades is a large part of the job.
What Japanese level do you need?
Most jobs ask for about JLPT N3 or higher, because daily site work is in Japanese. You talk with subcontractors, read drawings and write records. AGG-J-020 asks for about JLPT N3. See our guide on the Japanese level for engineering jobs.
What skills and software help?
Experience: construction management on MEP or building services projects.
Rebro: BIM software for building services that is used in Japan. AGG-J-020 includes training on it, so you do not need it before you start.
Revit: Revit MEP or other BIM experience is helpful.
Autodesk Forma: a strong plus for AGG-J-020.
For drawing and modelling roles, see our guide on BIM and CAD jobs in Japan.
Which licences help?
Japan's national construction management licence (sekou kanri gishi) has separate fields. For MEP work, the main ones are pipe work (管工事, kan-kouji) and electrical work (電気工事, denki-kouji). The exams are in Japanese. A licence helps your career, but check each job for what it requires. AGG-J-020 does not list a licence as a requirement.
Which visa do you need?
Most degree-holding engineers use the status of residence Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services. Your duties must be technical, such as planning, quality control and safety control. Manual site work does not fit this status. Immigration Services Agency (ISA) decides each case. See our visa guide.
If you live in Japan: you can usually change employer without new permission if the job fits your status. You must notify ISA within 14 days. See how to change jobs in Japan.
If you live abroad: you need a Certificate of Eligibility and a work visa first. For AGG jobs, AGG applies for the Certificate of Eligibility.
Can an MEP construction manager job be dispatch (haken)?
Yes, if your duties are management. Japan's Worker Dispatch Act prohibits dispatch for construction work itself, but construction management is not treated as construction work. If you are asked to do manual work in a dispatch job, talk to your employer. See construction management jobs in Japan and what haken means.
How can AGG help?
AGG Careers is the English job site of Fukuyoshi Inc. AGG-J-020 is an ongoing job on large projects with large-scale piping. You start with about 3 months of training: Rebro, and onboarding on building services in Japan. On-the-job training follows. Solid basic skills and a willingness to keep learning matter more than years of experience.
In this dispatch job, AGG is your employer and enrolls you in social insurance. The work location and full conditions are given in writing at your first consultation. See job AGG-J-020 and apply, or see all open jobs.
